If You Haven’t Had Success Yet, How Can You Promise Prospects Success?

I received this question from a fellow network marketer named Terry.

“Dear Tim,
I can’t get past the feelings of being a fake when I talk to my prospects, because I haven’t made it in this business yet, and yet I’m telling them I can help them to get what it is they need and want. I really do want to help others succeed, but am not sure that I can actually do so if I haven’t made it there myself. This is causing me to give up on prospects who have a need to make it work and who have a strong goal in focus – because if I say I can help them, but then I or they don’t succeed, I will feel like I’ve sold them a crock. This is really stopping me from getting out there and making this work” – Terry

Have you ever felt this way? I know many people (myself included) have. Here’s my reply to Terry:

Dear Terry,
I appreciate your honest desire to help people in your business – it is very obvious.
In my view what has happened to you is that you have recently ACTUALLY taken responsibility for people you sponsor in your business. There is, in fact, a difference between desiring to help people and taking responsibility for the outcome (or lack of) of their business.

When you really think this through, we are all “fakes” before we get results. But the irony is that we must get results to have results. Weird sentence but it will make sense later.
First of all, we in MLM are not any different than any other profession. A person can spend 10 years in college studying to be a lawyer but is still a fake until they get results for a client. Every carpenter must build his first house. Every beautician must cut her first “real” head of hair.
So, the direct answer in response to your question Terry is: It does you NO good to be having this conversation with yourself. You’re just stopping yourself. To use your words, “I can’t get past the feelings…” well, if you don’t get past the feelings you will have used your feelings to stop yourself from helping people as well as helping yourself.
So, how do you “get past the feelings?”

Recognize that every person must go through this – in everything they do! Thank goodness “experience” isn’t required for childbirth – otherwise there would be no children :) Believe it or not, there was a time when I hadn’t sponsored anyone.

Identify THE thing that you don’t quite (or completely) know how to do. Whatever you can’t do is WHAT’S STOPPING YOU FROM GETTING RESULTS.
Once you know what’s stopping you, fix that ONE thing. Then continue on and find the next thing you can’t do. Fix that one too.

I’m not kidding when I say that 92% of all the failures in MLM are a result of failure to communicate properly with the prospect.
Once you’ve fixed all YOUR problems you will now have the success formula that you can use to help every person you sponsor. You don’t carry someone to success – you help them to success by correctly identifying what’s stopping them and helping them fix it. It’s impossible to “make it yourself” without helping others. Helping others is a requirement to make it.

    Great advice! We must all Go past OUR feelings! We must not have self talk that says what is someone else going to ask, How Much Have I made in the Business?
    We must stop being concerned with what people are thinking and move forward!
    Never have to beg, borrow or steal to get people to join our Team!
    We must be confident and fearless!

    Another strategy is to build up your experience with smaller assignments or work under a fellow marketer for a period of time (if you know one). Although you may have to work for reduced rates, you get to build your experience in pave the way for future clients. This helps you professionally, but also helps you struggle with the ethical/psychological issues you raised.

    One of the important things in MLM is that if you sell the product or the business, you need sell it first to yourself. I mean, that many times you try to convince other people before that you believe enough in yourself that what you’re doing. And that’s fine, but it is important to pay attention to the point of this.

    That is a VERY interesting question. I’ve always thought the same, even questioning people at times, when they offer me a service. I’d say more than half the time they stumble around a bit, not fully answering my question. Why should I buy your advertising services when it’s not successful itself?
