Mastering Social Media One Bite at a Time

Mastering Social Media One Bite at a Time

This post is very pertinent to my own journey. It is easy to get distracted and running in too many different directions when setting up your points of contact on the web for your internet marketing. I have 2 youtube channels, my husband has a youtube channel for his new business, I have two blogs, my facebook and my twitter account. I have a dozen or so articles I have written thus far. My plan is to connect all these points and use my youtube channels, facebook and articles in part to drive traffic to my blog. As a Master Plan it has a lot of merit however there is something to be said for focusing your efforts.

In looking back at my internet marketing experience thus far I can see another approach that I believe deserves consideration. Pick one social media platform and master it. Once mastered pick another medium and master that as well. In other words build each piece of your network on the web one social medium at a time. I have been on Facebook for two years but only recently am I fully realizing the potential of Facebook.

I also recommend getting help in not only learning how to fully maximize each medium’s strength’s but also consider hiring a bright tech and marketing savvy high school student to help you with some of you social media tasks. I hired a wonderful young man who is helping me build up my friends on Facebook. I had lots of friends within my industry however I wanted to expand outside to different niche markets that would have an interest in what I’m offering. He is researching and having me join groups that are expanding my reach and connections on Facebook. My point of bringing this up here is the importance of not attempting to do everything yourself.

One of my biggest recommendations is to pick an area you want to master and focus on it until you feel you are really attaining some traction in your marketing within that social media. Create goals that are measurable and put systems in place to track your results. An example on my WordPress blog I’m using Get Clicky which tracks clicks and actions taken by visitors and gives me day to day analysis of my blog traffic. I know if I’m working with a particular social media like Facebook exclusively how well my Facebook strategies are generating traffic and of course comments, sign ups for my newsletter etc.

The most important thing is that you are having fun every step of the way. Remember to enjoy the process and remember internet marketing is a process. If you are feeling overwhelmed break the steps down to bite size tasks. Each task and accomplishment is opportunity to celebrate. Take a moment and give yourself an ada girl or ada boy.

I strongly recommend getting a blog started because your blog is the center piece of your marketing, your home base. After this first step pick Facebook or Youtube, etc. and master that medium. You’ll know when you are feeling good about your progress before adding another point of contact.  As you progress in your marketing take on the next social medium and master it. Remember one step at a time.

It won’t be long if you don’t hurry the process and take your marketing one bite at a time,  enjoying the journey every step of the way.

It’s amazing to read this Faith because my experience has been almost identical… so I feel almost as if I’d written it! I appreciate your insight about focusing on one aspect and mastering it before moving on. I also recognize personally how much I love to have lots of things happening simultaneously- hence the blog, the book I’m writing, the networking, and everything else. So I’m working on finding my balance and seeing what brings me the most joy without becoming overwhelming!

What a great, resourceful website you have. Thank you!
