Decide in terms of your marketing strategy what your target markets are and seek those individuals out. Be clear on your marketing goals so as you build your list of twitter followers you are attracting those who may be interested in what you are offering.
The hardest thing is to share and be heard on Twitter. If you have a big list of followers how do you target those followers that can benefit from what you are sharing? One of the social media mavens at this event shared with me that it would be very beneficial for me to use of hashtags in all my tweets when targeting a niche subject. An example if I want to tweet on a tip for social media I’d include #social media usually at the end of my tweet. My husband Larry who has been using Twitter for several years uses the hashtag prior to any key word in his sentence when he wants his subject to stand out to those who may be interested in picking up on what he is saying.
Create a list of 100 tips and share those tips over time with your target audience or niche market. Social Media is all about contributing value. Refrain from just blasting out your blog or website or affiliate links in all your tweets. Simply selling in social media is a quick way to get yourself ignored.
Be a good listener and contribute to the conversation. See what your niche market is wanting, concerned about or just chatting about and contribute to the conversation. Acknowledge others and give them thanks for their contributions. The more you contribute and offer value the more your stock as an authority and a person people want to know and do business increases. Networking in Social Media is no different than networking face to face, it is all about the connection.
Manage your time well. Make specific times to commit to being on your Twitter account. I think 15 minutes in the morning if possible and 15 minutes in the evening. Also, if you are posting from a blog or Facebook , submit your blog post mid morning or afternoon if possible. Submitting blog posts at 2:00 AM in the morning may not get picked up by many of your Twitter followers.
Conventional wisdom says that using automated friend following tools on Twitter is truly not to your advantage. It may seem like a good idea however you must bring the personal touch to your twitter marketing to be effective. A good tip though once you find an influential individual within your niche market then look up their favorite followers and follow them as well. You will learn about up and coming trends and receive great and timely information.
Be sure to target those who can benefit from what you have to offer and whom have a sphere of influence that would also allow you to extend your reach.
I hope these simple tips allow you to be more successful in your community building and connecting on Twitter.
